Harnessing Technology: From Software Development to Strategic IT Leadership
I began my career in 1994, graduating from Queens College with a degree in Computer Science. My first position was as a programmer at Stanley Black & Decker, a power tools company. Through dedication and hard work, I advanced to become the Director of IT for Latin America, a role that marked a significant milestone in my career by managing operations across a vast region and influencing global strategy.
Following my time at Stanley Black & Decker, I joined Ecolab, a major chemical manufacturer valued at around $50 billion. Currently, I am based in Colorado as the Senior Director of IT at MYR Group, a prominent electrical construction company with over 13 subsidiaries across the US and Canada. My responsibilities include leading IT initiatives to support the company's growth and adaptation, focusing on both traditional electrical projects and emerging renewable energy technologies.
Career Growth and IT's Rising Importance
My roles and responsibilities have grown significantly, highlighting my personal development.
•At Stanley Black & Decker: I started as a programmer, focusing on software development and small IT projects. As I advanced, I began supervising operations for a specific region and later took on strategic planning to align strategies with company’s goals in Latin America.
•At Ecolab: As Director of IT for International Markets, I managed global IT strategies to support Ecolab’s operations and improved systems and processes for better efficiency and worked with various teams to integrate solutions that drove business growth.
•At MYR Group: Now, as Senior Director of IT, I lead strategy for 13 subsidiaries, drive technological innovation in both traditional and renewableenergy sectors, and ensure our systems are secure and aligned with our goals.
Challenges in the IT Landscape
Throughout my career, I have faced several challenges that reflect broader trends in the IT industry.
•IT as a Strategic Partner: Shifting its role from a support function to a strategic partner has been a major challenge. Traditionally viewed as a cost center focused on financial systems, it is now recognized as essential for business success. The goal is to make IT a key player in strategic decisions, often by having it report directly to the CEO.
•Financial Impact of Subscription-Based Models: The move from traditional licensed software to subscription-based models has introduced significant financial changes. Companies now face large upfront subscription costs rather than capitalizing investments over time. This shift necessitates a reevaluation of IT budgeting and financial management.
The most important part of being a leader is picking the right team. If you pick a team of winners, you're going to win; if you pick a team of mediocre professionals, that's not going to work.
•Cyber security in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI): As technology progresses, businesses need to heavily invest in cyber security to defend against emerging threats. The key challenge is to stay ahead of these risks and maintain strong security in a constantly evolving landscape.
Key IT Trends Shaping the Future
Several trends are transforming the IT landscape, and keeping up with these changes is crucial for staying competitive.
•Data Analytics: Data analytics is essential for making informed business decisions. Advanced tools help organizations gain valuable insights from large datasets, making data integration into IT strategies vital for leveraging its full potential.
• AI: It is driving major technological advancements by automating tasks, analyzing data, and enhancing decision-making. However, it also brings new cyber security challenges, requiring companies to invest in advanced security measures to counter AI-related threats.
• Cloud Computing: Cloud computing is popular for its flexibility, scalability, and cost-efficiency. It allows organizations to scale IT resources without large upfront hardware investments, fundamentally changing IT infrastructure and operations.
Project Initiatives and Leadership Strategies
One of my most impactful projects was the IT transformation at Ecolab. This initiative aimed to modernize IT infrastructure, improve system integration, and boost operational efficiency.
• Outcomes Achieved: The project brought significant benefits. We increased efficiency by streamlining IT operations, resulting in cost savings and better performance. Enhanced integration between IT systems and business functions also improved team collaboration. Moreover, the upgraded infrastructure was scalable, supporting future growth and helping the company adapt to changing market demands.
• Leadership Insights: Effective leadership for me involves building a strong team and knowing when to be hands-on or hands-off. It's essential to recruit passionate leaders who drive success and to balance trust with involvement in critical issues. Understanding the business is key; IT professionals must spend time learning about the business they support to align technology with its needs.
• Dos and Don’ts: Engaging with the business is key to making sure IT solutions are relevant and effective. By understanding business processes and challenges, you can tailor technology to specific needs and maintain clear communication between IT and business units. This helps demonstrate technology’s value and ensures smoother implementation. Avoid assuming technology will fit business needs without understanding the context first. Additionally, prioritize cyber security—investing in strong security measures is crucial to protect data and assets from new threats, especially with advances in AI.

Reflecting on my career, I’ve learned that adaptability is crucial for managing changing technologies and business environments. Strategic thinking is essential for aligning IT with business goals, and continuous learning is important for staying updated with industry trends. My journey from a programmer at Stanley Black & Decker to Senior Director of IT at MYR Group has been about growth and understanding how technology drives business success.
